Our Story: A Legacy of Precision and Safety
In 1980, a catastrophic aviation accident reshaped the future of aerospace testing. An MD-12 lost both engines shortly after takeoff due to hydrogen embrittlement—a failure that resulted in devastating loss. At an NTSB crash investigation meeting, Richard Green turned to his colleague Craig Willan and said, “I know how to make the parts to prevent this from happening.” Craig replied, “I know how to test them.”
From that conversation, Green Specialty Service, Inc. was born.
Starting in his garage, Richard began producing notched tensile specimens to help Bell Helicopter and Menasco detect hydrogen embrittlement in plating and coating processes. His early commitment to safety, innovation, and machining precision quickly gained attention. By 1982, he expanded into a dedicated manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, TX.
As hydrogen embrittlement testing became standardized across the aerospace industry, Green Specialty Service, Inc. became a trusted supplier for OEMs and government agencies across North America. Richard’s growing influence led him to contribute to the development of ASTM F519, shaping global aerospace testing protocols.
Expanding Our Reach and Industry Influence
In 1993, Boeing approved Green Specialty Service, Inc. as a supplier of notched tensile bars—solidifying its reputation for quality and reliability. Approvals from Messier-Dowty (now Safran) soon followed, opening doors to customers across Europe and Asia.
Throughout the 2000s, the company expanded its capabilities to meet the aerospace industry’s evolving needs—adding fatigue testing, chemical environment testing, and impact testing to its offerings. Green Specialty Service, Inc. became a key player in validating materials and processes for critical flight components.
From 2016 to 2021, the company collaborated with Boeing to help develop a proprietary specification addressing hydrogen embrittlement in flight-critical components. Richard remained a consistent contributor to ASTM F519, and since 1980, no catastrophic aviation incident due to hydrogen embrittlement has been reported—a legacy that continues to define our mission today.
Leading the Industry Today
Now operating as an AS9100D-certified aerospace and defense manufacturing company, Green Specialty Service, Inc. is the leading global supplier of hydrogen embrittlement test specimens. What began as a mission to prevent failures in aerospace systems has grown into a full-service machine shop, serving the world’s top OEMs, government agencies, and aerospace suppliers with precision test specimens and mission-critical machined components.
We remain driven by our history, defined by our quality, and trusted worldwide by those who demand the highest standards in aerospace and defense manufacturing.
